Since its inception in 1984 the
activities of the Vivekananda Swasthya Seva Sangha (VSSS) have steadily
grown and the number of village centres also multiplied. Following the
ideal Service to man as service to God, as preached by Swami
Vivekananda, the Sangha renders selfless services in the clusters of
villages in rural West Bengal through its seven rural service centres
and several sub-centres.
Though
the organization's activities are explicitly targeted towards primary
health care programme; the organization is implementing an integrated
approach encompassing education and other socio-economic development
activities.
A total
number of 77 villages spreading over seven districts of West Bengal have
been adopted by the Sangha covering 1.22 lakhs population comprising of
Hindu, Muslim, and Tribal communities.
Health Care Service
As
regards serving rural and tribal people, VSSS runs seven rural health
centres and several satellite sub-centres. The activities are mainly
based on curative, preventive and promotive aspects of primary health
care programme of the Govt. of India and World Health Organization. On
an average 51,330 persons were served annually during the last 5 years.
Promotive Programmes: Home
visit; Health Education; Audio-Visual; Health Mela; Mother’s Meeting;
Special Training; Early Childhood Education; Family Welfare, etc. Preventive Programmes: Immunization; Mother & Child Health; Nutritional Supplementation Therapy(NST); Environmental Sanitation; Drinking Water Low Cost Sanitation; Smokeless Ovens; Waste Management, etc.
Curative Programmes: Patients Treatment &Medicine; Specialized Clinics; Eye Operation; X-Ray, etc.
Community Health Guides(CHG)
Our CHG make home visits to educate and supervise the rural mass on best practices in physical and environmental health.
Mobile Health Care Unit
Our Medical Vans provides
medical services on wheels to the remote rural areas. The Mobile Unit
visits five rural centres by rotation every week and stays three days at
a stretch at each Centre. It also renders the following routine
services: Audio-visuals on health; Immunization; Conducting Home visits;
Refresher course for Volunteers and CHG; Nutritional supplementation
therapy; Naranarayan Seva, etc.
Socio-Economic Development Programmes Community Polytechnic, Fishery, Duckery; Cultural and Sports, Non-Formal Education; Library; Spiritual & Moral Education; WeeklyStudyCircle; Retreat etc.
Education
The Sangha serves on an average more than 300 rural women and children annually through its 3 Adult Education centres and 5 Early Childhood Education centres.
Earning Generation
About
120 rural youths and farmers are trained annually in various trades, -
farming, tailoring and wool-knitting, computer operation, etc - through
community polytechnics, and through agro-based seminars and workshops
organized by the Sangha in its rural service centres.

Benefits
of all the participative activities are extended to deserving people,
regardless of their belonging to any particular community or religion.
VSSS is nourished by the moral guidance of Monks of Ramakrishna Order
and technical know-how from experts of Public Health following WHO
guidelines. The voluntary participation and wholehearted cooperation of
various groups in carrying out the activities has developed the feeling
of national solidarity in a long lasting way.
